Authentic Corn Tortillas

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Servings: Makes approximately 12 tortillas

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

Tools:

  • Mixing bowl

  • Tortilla press or rolling pin

  • Parchment paper or plastic wrap

  • Griddle or skillet

Instructions:

1. In a mixing bowl, combine masa harina and salt (if using). Gradually add warm water while stirring until a soft dough forms.

2. Knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth. If the dough feels too dry, add a bit more water; if it's too sticky, add a touch more masa harina.

3. Divide the dough into golf ball-sized portions.

4. Preheat your griddle or skillet over medium-high heat.

5. If using a tortilla press:

  • Place a ball of dough between two pieces of parchment paper or plastic wrap.

  • Press down with the tortilla press to flatten it into a thin, round tortilla.

  • If using a rolling pin:

  • Roll out each ball of dough between two sheets of parchment paper or plastic wrap until thin.

6. Carefully transfer the tortilla to the hot griddle or skillet.

7. Cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until it puffs up slightly and gets golden brown spots.

8. Repeat the process for the remaining dough balls.

Storage:

  • Store the tortillas in a clean kitchen towel or a tortilla warmer to keep them warm and pliable.

Chef Notes:

  • For extra flavor, consider adding a hint of lime zest or a touch of chili powder to the masa dough.

  • Experiment with different fillings for delicious tacos or enjoy them on their own with your favorite salsa or guacamole.
